About the BASSE Project

Paraplegic Sporting Event

The Building Activity in Schools in Special Education (BASSE) project is a collaborative initiative involving pupils, educators, families, the Education Authority Northern Ireland, community organisations, and National Governing Bodies, from across Northern Ireland. The project led by researchers from Ulster University and Queens University Belfast is designed to support special education settings embed whole school approaches to physical activity to enhance the health and wellbeing of pupils with additional needs and disabilities.

The first phase of the project led to the co-development of a guidance document to help special education settings implement a whole school approach to physical activity, movement, and play across six key domains, including:

  • Sensory and Behavioural Regulation

  • Quality Physical Education

  • Physical Play

  • Active Classrooms

  • Organised Physical Activity

  • School Sport

Future phases of the BASSE project will focus on policy development, shared learning initiatives, and training for physical activity champions.

If you would like to get involved in any of the BASSE project activities, please contact the project lead Dr Erin Byrd ( e.byrd@ulster.ac.uk )
