Implementing a Whole School Approach to Physical Activity, Movement and Play in Special Education Settings:
A Co-Developed Guidance Document
The Building Active Schools in Special Education: Guidance Document is a co-developed resource aimed at supporting schools to create inclusive, engaging, and sustainable physical activity environments for pupils with additional needs and disabilities.

This resource has been developed collaboratively with educators, the Education Authority Northern Ireland, community organisations, researchers and families, ensuring that the strategies and practices reflect lived experience and promote meaningful participation in physical activity for all pupils.

Rooted in principles of implementation science, the guidance provides practical frameworks that align with existing school priorities, adapt to a variety of special education contexts, and foster a culture where physical activity is a valued and integrated part of school life.
